1st Lieutenant John Martin (Mark's 5th and Zach's 6th great-grandfather) was born on October 23, 1739 in Piscataway, New Jersey. He joined the New Jersey militia in 1776, fought in the Battle of Long Island, then was commissioned in the autumn of that year as a Lieutenant of Captain William Bond's company in Colonel Ephraim Martin's 4th New Jersey Regiment of the Continental Army. His pension application lists that he fought in the Battles of Strawberry Hill and Ash Swamp which were part of the Battle of Short Hills. He also fought in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown. He encamped at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777 and was discharged in 1778. John's wife was Susannah Elizabeth Catlin (Born May 1740 / Death Feb. 21, 1822) At some point after the war John moved to Marietta, Ohio where he died on May 14, 1837 at the age of 97 years old. He is buried at Alexander Cemetery, Hebbardsville, Ohio.
