Submitted by Compatriot David M. Paretti (Member #199064)

Petrus (Peter)Quick was my 4th great-grandfather, born 28 Jan.1727/1728 in Ulster County, New York. He married Johanna Consalus-Duk on 17 Nov. 1748. He died in the year of 1806. His residence and homestead farm were located at Sarepta, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Petrus served as a private/sergeant in the Revolutionary War under Captain Joseph Mackey's 1st regiment of the New Jersey Militia. It is noted in one of his son's pension papers that Petrus volunteered his services to buy cattle for the Continental Army and used his teams to deliver his wheat and grain to the Revolutionary War soldiers to make bread. He provided this service during and until the end of the war. (Note: some of the foundations of a grain mill located on the Beaver Brook in Sarepta, NJ remain close to the Petrus homestead). Petrus and Johanna had eleven children of which seven were his sons and served in the militia during the war. Petrus was not only their father but, in some situations, their commanding officer as also noted on their pension applications. Listed are the seven and their service:

  1. Philipus (Philip) Quick: Private, Sussex County Militia under Capt's Brown and Mackey. Served monthly tours in 1776/1777.
  2. Benjamin Quick: Private in Capt. Mackey's Co. and a Corporal in Capt. Bonnel's Co. Enlisted June 1781 and discharged Nov 1781.
  3. John Quick: Private and sergeant in Capt. Mackey's Co. Enlisted 1776/1777 and served tours until 1780. He was at the battles of Trenton (Dec.1776) and Monmouth (June 1778). During the battle of Trenton he was wounded in the leg by a musket ball.
  4. James Quick: Private in Capt. Mackey's Co. Sussex, NJ and also served in Hunterdon Co. Militia.
  5. Peter Quick: Private in Capt. Vroom's Co., 2nd Bat. Somerset Co.
  6. Manuel Quick: Private in Capt. Mackey's Co. and Col. Jacob West's 1st Regt. Sussex Co.
  7. Samuel Quick: Private 1st and 2nd Regt's Sussex Co. Militia under Capt's Winter Kirkendall and Mackey, He served monthly tours 1776/1777, was at the battle of Springfield (Dec.1776), and also served in the Pennsylvania Militia 1776 until the war's end.
