Patriot Ancestor: Philip Derr

Submitted by Compatriot Archer Jones

George Adam Main (15 May 1746 to 17 May 1822), my 9th great-grandfather, signed the Oath of Allegiance in 1775/1776 and was an Associator of Freemen of Maryland. He was a landowner and farmer in Middletown, Frederick County, Md and supplied provisions to military units during the Revolutionary War. He was the son of Johann Georg Mehn, who was born in Germany and came to America in 1736. Georg joined the German community in Middletown Valley, Md and continued to expand his land holdings until his death in 1801.

In that German community was Philip Derr, another Patriot from which I descend. Philip Derr (25 Feb 1750 to 03 Feb 1821) served as a private in Capt. Basil William’s Company of the Maryland Militia in Washington County.

Johan Nicholas Haupt, Sr. was born in Windesheim, Germany in 1725 and came to America with his family before the Revolutionary War and settled in Nochamixon, Bucks County, PA. He signed the Oath of Allegiance on 14 Aug 1778. His son, Johan Nicholas Haupt, moved to the Middletown Valley after the War.

I am also descended from John West (1758 to 10 Dec 1808) who served as a private in the Virginia Regiment. He was the 4th generation of the West family of Fairfax Co, VA, to be born in America. His father, Thomas West, was killed fighting during the French & Indian War.
